Morning sickness symptom

Question: I have what I think is a morning sickness symptom. I am pregnant and I can't eat anything. Can you recommend a morning sickness remedy or something to provide morning sickness relief?

Dear TracyAnn,

I am sorry you are having such a hard time with morning sickness. And I am sorry I can't offer you a simple morning sickness cure. There is no cure, but there are lots of things you can try that might offer you some morning sickness relief. The most important thing to do is to make sure that your doctor is aware of your situation. Sometimes when the morning sickness symptom is really bad, they can prescribe safe medication that helps, called Diclectin.

Here are some tips to help you:

1. Eat small amounts of food every three hours. Try to keep something in your stomach at all times.

2. Eat whatever you feel like eating. Even if the only thing you can stand is ice cream, go ahead and eat it. It doesn't matter if it is healthy or not, the important thing is to eat something. (I have to confess, I used to eat salami straight out of the bag from the deli - that was what I craved.)

3. Drink eight glasses of water every day. If you are dehydrated, it makes nausea worse and this can be a vicious cycle. If you cannot tolerate plain water, drink herbal tea, or add apple juice or any other kind of juice to the water.

4. Try ginger. Make sure it is "real" ginger. Health food stores have a product that is a ginger and honey syrup which you can add to water and drink. This is a great natural morning sickness remedy.

5. Try peppermint or chamomile herbal teas.

6. Avoid strong odors. When I was pregnant, my husband once opened a can of tuna and I almost threatened to divorce him! I couldn't believe that he could do such a cruel thing to me. I was clearly not thinking straight!

7. Try eating only cold food. Hot or warm food tends to have a stronger odor.

8. Try eating plain crackers lying down in bed before you even get out of bed in the morning. My husband used to bring me crackers in bed and a cup of tea. Then, make sure you get up slowly.

9. I found that morning sickness was worse when I was overtired, so try to get a nap in during the day if you can if you can.

10. Try Ensure or Boost, which are nutritional supplement drinks. The chocolate ones are pretty good! Get them in the can, already mixed. The powder kind that you add to milk are gross.

Above all, make sure your doctor knows that you are experiencing severe morning sickness symptom. He or she needs to know so that they can ensure that you and your baby are getting enough nutrients and may be able to suggest another type of morning sickness remedy. Make sure you are taking a good quality vitamin as well.

I am sending all my positive thoughts your way!

Thank you again for visiting my website. I wish you all the best and I hope your morning sickness symptom goes away soon! You will probably start to feel better when you reach 12 weeks. Hang in there!
