How to Get Pregnant

By now, you probably already know how to get pregnant, but if you've been trying to get pregnant for some time, you may be at the stage where you may be wondering if there is something more you could be doing. Am I right?

The topic of how to get pregnant is a popular one these days because more and more women are waiting until their 30's to start a family, and the older we get, the less fertile we are. It seems like all our lives we have been trying so hard NOT to get pregnant. Personally, I thought it would be a breeze to get pregnant but I didn't realise I had a few things to learn about exactly how to get pregnant.

When James and I were trying to get pregnant, we used to joke that if only we were teenagers in the backseat of the car we'd get pregnant so easily! (I was trying to make you smile with that one...)

OK, besides the obvious, I mean, man and woman, having intercourse, there are a few things I can recommend regarding how to get pregnant.

First of all, there are many websites devoted entirely to this topic and it's called TTC or Trying to Conceive. Don't search "how to get pregnant", do a search using "ttc".

Here are two really good ones: www.tryingtoconceive.com and ttcdreams.com. You should check those out. These sites and others with forums where you can ask questions are really wonderful and full of supportive people who know that you are going through. You can learn a lot about how to get pregnant and you will not feel alone.

James and I tried for eight months to get pregnant with each of our kids (to some of you that may not seem like a long time, but to us it felt like a very long time. But I can appreciate that it is actually within the normal range and I really feel for women that have been trying for much longer.) I know what it's like when you are hoping and praying and holding your breath every month... and then... oh no! My period has arrived. AGAIN. It can be so depressing, I know. But hang in there! And here are some tips you can try:

How To Get Pregnant

1. Gain Some Weight. If you are underweight, it is difficult to get pregnant. At least that's what I found. I was thin, but not too thin, and when I gained about 8 pounds, I got pregnant. I think that if you are thin (and this is just my opinion) our bodies are just not prepared to get pregnant, almost as if your body feels that it doesn't have enough stores of fat to take care of the baby.

2. Take off his underwear! What I really mean is, get your partner out of those tighty-whiteys and into some boxer shorts. Sperm cannot live in a hot environment; they need room to breathe.

3. Lie down. After intercourse, remain lying still on your back for about 30 minutes to allow those swimmers to GO for the GOLD!

4. Dance the old fashioned way! Do the baby dance in the missionary position (or at least "end up" in that position (wink!)) so that you are not going against gravity.

5. Cool down, mister. Ask your partner to stay out of hottubs, because heat kills sperm. And it takes three months to build up more, so keep that in mind when you are planning to get pregnant.

6. Rise up, rise up. Place a pillow under your bottom after intercourse so that your pelvis is tilted back.

7. Robitussin. I never tried this myself, but I know women who did. They say that Robitussin (the brand name of an expectorant based on guaifenesin) thins the cervical mucus to make it more sperm-friendly. I would ask your doctor before trying this, just to be sure it's safe. People say to take 1-2 tsp. twice daily until ovulation. People also say to ensure that the product you buy only contains guaifenesin without any other added decongestants or antihistamines because they could actually dry up your cervical mucus and make it more difficult to get pregnant.

8. Timing is everything. Contrary to astounding popular belief, ALL women do NOT ovulate on the 14th day of their cycle. Think about it -- how could that be feasible for all women in the world to ovulate on the 14th day of their cycle? It is a totally man-made theory. What if your regular cycle is 35 days, always? (Mine is, and for years and years I always thought it was a week late - is that dumb or what?! I finally figured out, Hey, this is normal for my body!). If you are trying to learn more about how to get pregnant, I strongly recommend that you take some time to learn all the intricacies of your own body and your cycle so that you can know exactly what is normal for you. And then you will know when you ovulate. There is a book out there that is basically the "bible" of TTC called Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. She is the absolute guru of fertility and it is a GREAT book. You absolutely should read it. If you're anything like me, you will wonder why on earth we are not taught this stuff. It's your body and you have a right to know how it works.

I sincerely hope that these tips have shed a little light on how to get pregnant. I wish you all the best in your endeavours.

Yours,

Suzanne

P.S. Try to have fun doing it! It can get to be a chore (Here's me, "Hurry up, ER's on at 10!") but try to remember when sex used to be fun!
