HCG Levels in Early Pregnancy

Women are often concerned with their hcg levels in early pregnancy. If you have a midwife, you'll probably never get tested for it.

What is hcg? It stands for Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and it is a glycoprotein hormone produced in pregnancy that is made by the developing embryo soon after conception and later by the syncytiotrophoblast (part of the placenta).

Its role is to maintain progesterone production that is critical for a pregnancy in humans. Some scientists say that hCG may have additional functions as well. For example, it is thought that hCG can have an affect on the immune tolerance of the pregnancy.

Early pregnancy testing, in general, is based on the detection or measurement of hCG. So when you pee on the stick, it's really looking for hcg levels. But if you test too early, you will not be producing enough and the test will come out negative.

That's why people say you can have a false negative pregnancy test but not a false positive test.

When I was pregnant with Alexa, that's exactly what happened to me. I went to a clinic and the doctor told me I was not pregnant and I was shocked. I started to cry right there in his office! I wanted to be pregnant again so badly.

So I went home and called my friend Erin and she said, "Take another test" so I did and it was positive! Some pregnancy tests are better at detecting hCG levels than others. Please visit my adveritser's website below to shop for pregnancy tests:
